    Volunteer Mission Statement

    Perkiomen Valley, Inc.. in achieving its mission to:

  • encourage local historical research and publication of results,
  • promote historical activities in the community, and
  • encourage the preservation of historic sites.
  • Volunteer Opportunities

    The Volunteer Program provides a wide range of volunteer opportunities from mailings to providing hospitality at the Visitor Center, the Muhlenberg House, and the Dewees Museum


General and Seasonal



Docent/Tour Guide


Conduct tours of the Muhlenberg House or the Dewees Museum; interpreting the life of Henry Muhlenberg and his family, The Germanic Architecture, the 18th century, and the development of the surrounding community to visitors.



Visitor Center

 

Welcome and greet visitors; answer telephone; take messages; provide assistance, information and direction to visitors and callers; handle admission sales and museum shop sales.



Public Relations

 

Assist in the preparation of the Society newsletter or press releases.



Mailings

 

Assist in mailings by addressing, stamping, and stuffing envelopes.



Data Entry

 

Entering and updating information using various software programs. Familiarity with Windows, Word, Access, Excel, and/or Microsoft Publisher a plus.



Building Preservation

 

Assist the Property Committee in preservation of the buildings.

Painting and carpentry skills are a plus.



Grounds

 

Assist the Grounds Committee in the care of the plantings, weeding, watering, and mulching.



Historic Housekeeper

 

Assist the Museum Committee in the cleaning of architectural features and historic collections.



Special Program Planning

 

Join the Special Program Planning Committee to plan events, bus trips, programs, and dinners.



Education Specialist

 

Develop educational opportunities for childre


Special Events



Admissions Taker

 

Welcome and greet visitors, collect special event admissions, and provide basic information about the event.



Craftsperson

 

Demonstrate your skills in an 18th century craft. Some needed crafts include joinery, basket making, quilting, coopering, broom-making, tanning, dyeing, tin smithing, and cobbling.



Membership

 

Staff the membership table explaining the benefits of membership in the Society.



Food Preparation/Server

 

Assist Hospitality Committee in preparing and serving sweets and beverages.



Parking Assistant

 

Provide direction to visitors and guests during special events on proper areas to park his/her vehicle and provide basic information about the event.



Room Guide

 

Special events require guides to be stationed in each room of the Muhlenberg House and the Dewees Museum. Guides interpret specific topics appropriate to the assigned room and its displayed artifacts.



Set-up/Clean-up

 

Assist in marking crafter’s areas, setting up and breaking down tables and chairs/benches, trash can placement and collection, distribution of straw and firewood as needed, and general grounds clean-up.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age or accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is no minimum commitment of time required to volunteer.
